Can I use special characters in my domain name?
Domain names can only include a limited set of characters. Typically, a domain name can consist of:
- Letters from the Latin alphabet (A to Z, case-insensitive)
- Numbers (0 to 9)
- Hyphens (-)
Special characters, such as spaces, underscores, or punctuation marks (like !, @, #, $, %, &, *, +), are not allowed in domain names.
However, it's important to note that there is an exception for non-Latin characters used in domain names known as Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). IDNs allow domain names to include characters from other scripts or languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Hebrew, or Hindi. These domain names are encoded using a system called Punycode, which represents non-Latin characters with a string of ASCII characters starting with "xn--". This encoded format ensures compatibility with the existing Domain Name System (DNS).
If you plan to use an IDN, check if your preferred domain registrar supports IDN registration and be aware that some web browsers or systems may have issues displaying or resolving non-Latin characters in domain names.
